Baling Information If you are considering purchasing a baler or indeed any other equipment to process your recyclable waste materials then please feel free to contact us for independent advice, helping you to make the right decision. We operate a strict policy of 'Best Advice'. The Full Picture If you are going to buy a baler to generate or increase the revenue you receive for your recyclable materials you should be aware of the following: Mill Size Bales Are defined as 'Wire Tied' (not string or plastic strapping) with a minium of 4 bindings with an approximate weight of 500kg. Vertical balers use cut'n'looped wire, todays price is approximately £820.00 per tonne! Load Weights The whole purpose of purchasing and operating a 'Mill Size' baler is to be able to supply your bales directly to a Paper Mill. If your bales are not transported directly to a Paper Mill, then it is most likely that they are being double handled & incuring double haulage in both cases using more fuel increasing the harmful effects to the environment, which really is not the purpose of recycling. Also this means that the value you are recieving for your bales is likely to be less as further costs are incurred. To supply a Paper Mill directly you need to load your bales onto either a curtain sided articulated trailer or into a shipping container for export. If you are loading a curtain sided trailer then you are required to load a minimum of 20-25 tonnes (upto 60 bales depending on your baler) and should have a 'Clamp Truck' for the save and efficient movement of your bales. If you are loading shipping containers, then you will need a suitable ramp, low mast clamp truck and weighbridge on-site. Storage If bales are stored outside for long periods of time they can become very wet, adding to the weight so you should expect moisture claims from the Paper Mill being supplied. Also if stored outside for long periods of time particularly during seasonal temperature changes bales can generate heat internally and become a serious fire risk. Thus, bales should be collected on a frequent basis to avoid these problems. This is something to seriously consider if you do not produce enough materail to make a 20 tonne load on a regular basis. In many cases outside storage of bales can require planning permission, this should always be checked before purchasing a baler.
